The concentrations of H 2, CH 4, and CO 2 in the headspaces were measured using a GC-2014 gas chromatograph (Shimadzu) equipped with a thermal conductivity detector and with a Shincarbon ST 50/80 (6 m × 3.0 mm) packed column (Shinwa Chemical Industries Ltd, Kyoto, Japan). Pure Ar gas (> 99.999%) was used as the carrier gas. In taxonomy, the Desulfurococcaceae are a family of the disc-shaped anaerobic microorganisms belonging to the order Desulfurococcales, in the domain Archaea. Members of this family are distinguished from the other family (Pyrodictiaceae) in the order Desulfurococcales by having an optimal growth temperature below 100 °C, rather than above 100 °C, and by being more diverse. The crystal structure was solved by molecular replacement (MR) using a dimer from PDB 4XDZ (Ia-KARI from Ignisphaera aggregans, with 66% sequence identity to Sac-KARI) as the search model. The selective inhibition of bacterial β-glucuronidases was recently shown to alleviate drug-induced gastrointestinal toxicity in mice, including the damage caused by the widely used anticancer drug irinotecan.

The nanoarchaeote (Ncl-1) and its host (NZ3T) were isolated in co-culture and their genomes assembled. The small (~200 nm) flagellated cocci were often attached to larger cocci. Based on 16S rRNA gene similarity (88.4%) and average amino acid identity (52%), Ncl-1 is closely related to Candidatus Nanopusillus acidilobi.

2006 is the type and sole species of genus Ignisphaera. This archaeal species is characterized by a coccoid-shape and is strictly anaerobic, moderately acidophilic, heterotrophic hyperthermophilic and fermentative.

The lipid cores from Ignisphaera aggregans, a hyperthermophilic Crenarchaeon recently isolated from New Zealand hot springs, have been profiled by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

The species is a facultatively microaerophilic non-motile crenarchaeon.
