I am usually a fan of port finished whisky and port Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish. Concertmaster single malt is finished in a combination of three varieties of port casks – Ruby Port, Tawny Port and Vintage Port – after its initial period of time spent in American Oak casks (hence the “Concertmaster” title). This is the second whisky under the Kavalan label, from 2009, and it was finished on Portugese port casks, both Ruby, Tawny and Vintage Port. No spirit caramel for this Concertmaster. The port casks gave it enough color as it is. Oh, my, this nose is even sweeter and more tropical than the Kavalan Single Malt.

It makes a number of relatively entry-level single malts (like Kavalan Single Malt, Podium, Conductor and Concertmaster), but is best known for higher-end single cask whiskies sold under the Solist label (detecting a theme there?).

The nose has tropical fruitiness with honey, vanilla, coconut & candy floss. The palate is rich bodied with natural sweetness and complexity. Awarded Double Gold Medal at 2017 WSWA Competition.
